Midgett Video Production Floyd Footage Captures

Many thanks to Midgett Video Productions for allowing me to capture some photos of Long Beach NC from their Floyd's Fury: The Town of Oak Island, N.C.hurricane damage video (click here to purchase). Long Beach has been my favorite summer retreat since I was a child; I have been going there for each of 25 years. The destruction was massive and much worse than anything since I have been travelling there. Those who know Long Beach well will recognize some of the structures. I have annotated the estimated locations of some of the shots below. Most of the shots are from the East end of the beach (my family used to have a house at 4005 East Beach Drive) where most of the major damage was. There was little video of mid-west beach (such as where we stay these days at 2500 W. Beach Drive) and a little of the far west beach, so damage was less west than east. This page has been put up especially for my family who also has been going to that beach for a long time. Guys, prepare to see a different Long Beach next summer!

This is coming up on 40th Street East. The pink building was once my grandfather's Ferrell Real Estate and Surf's Up Golf. I believe that it is now the Cabana Republic. There was a small space across from the pink building where our house, the Anchor Inn, was moved away in 1997, but it looks like some nearby houses "shifted" to fill in part or all fo the space.

This is 40th street East. There should be NO interruptions in the houses on 1st row here but as you can see, quite a few were completely obliterated.

1st Row, East Beach Avenue Between 40th and 50th Street, I think.

East Beach Avenue Between 40th and 30th Street, I think. Umm... I don't think that pink house is where it should be... Again, there should be NO interruptions in the houses on 1st row here but as you can see, quite a few were completely obliterated.

East Beach Avenue Between 40th and 20th Street, I think. That is the Gazebo on the right.

East Beach Avenue near 50th street (near The Deck at the curve. This deck isn't doing anyone any good anymore.

This is (what's left of) the Ocean Crest Pier, formerly the longest pier on the East Coast I believe. It lost at least a third of its length.

The small blue house with the grass in the backyard, at the middle of this picture, is the famous Strawberries diner. It looks like it is mostly intact, but across the street a couple of houses are missing. That is the Gazebo on the left.

Damage at the West end of the beach was considerably less common, but every once in a while a house had been knocked over.
