HEADLINE: Final Analysis
HEADLINE: 1500 5/31/97 On the afternoon of 5/31/97, an interesting area of
clouds developed off the coast of Florida, warranting notice of the National
Hurricane Center in Miami. They issued a statement but noted that the pressure
was not falling.
HEADLINE: 1100 6/1/97
The NHC has noticed that pressure is falling with the swirl, which is now off of the NC coast. A hurricane plane is flying in to investigate. You'll note, though, with the sea surface temperatures (see below) that if it keeps heading northerly it will run into colder waters.
HEADLINE: 1900 6/1/97
The NHC has downplayed the importance of this system, despite the fact that all the telltale signs of a tropical depression were on hand: lowered pressure, rotation, a warm core, and considerable convection. Likely they realized that there was no need to alarm the public since the system is moving into colder water as we speak. Looks like it's a no-go this time, folks.
